Overall Description
Pisa
Pisa is of Etruscan origin and was an important naval base for the Romans. Its most celebrated attraction today is the Leaning Tower of Pisa which - along with the Coliseum, gondolas and spaghetti - has become a symbol of Italy. You can visit the "Field of Miracles" and see the Leaning Tower, the cathedral, the "Campo Santo" cemetery, the Baptistery and the cathedral museum. After a lengthy restoration a few years ago, the tower was reopened and you can now go to the top to admire the view. The climb to the summit is an experience in itself, as you can feel the "lean" in the structure while you wind your way towards the peak.
San Gimignano
Located in the Elsa Valley, San Gimignano is a splendid treasure hidden in the heart of the famous Tuscan countryside. The first buildings that will catch your eyes are the majestic medieval watchtowers where wealthy families lived and were well protected from enemy attacks. As you turn left and right, admire every building of this charming village where locals still live peacefully. It is a quiet village that has descended through time from the Etruscan period to the Romans, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and from the Medici and the Lorena nobility. San Gimignano has always been extremely important for an economy based on agriculture. Fifteen watchtowers are visible today (seventy-two existed in the Middle Ages) and tourists have heard it referred to as the "Medieval Manhattan".
ITINERARY
Pisa-San Gimignano
Pisa (in the past known as the Portus Pisanus) was born as Port thanks to the Arno River that flows through the city. Our driver will give you lots of information about this incredible town, and you will learn that before the construction of the famous Leaning Tower in 1173, Pisa lived unbelievable historical periods from the Etruscan Age (almost 3000 years ago) to the Renaissance when the Medici and Florence jumped to the throne. You will have plenty of time to stroll around the Miracles' Square where the mighty Leaning Tower, The Duomo, The Baptistery and Monumental Cemetery will make you fall in love of this amazing town. We will then leave Pisa to start the drive towards the medieval village of San Gimignano, probably the most famous one in the whole Chianti Region. The incredible location and architecture make this place definitely unique. You have to know that San Gimignano is known mostly for its 13 medieval watch Towers, in ht east used as house-forts. You might choose to climb on top of the tallest one, called the "Torre Grossa", or enter the little church of "Collegiata" completely covered with Frescoes, or visiting the Torture Museum! In San Gimignano there will be plenty of local stores selling wines, olive oil, hand painted pottery, leather good and more. Upon request you can also have a delicious traditional lunch in a local family owned farm or Trattoria or visit a winery (see details below). or visiting the Torture Museum!
